How the snowball strategy works

The debt snowball method focuses on paying off the smallest balance first while continuing to make minimum payments on all other debts. Once the first balance is eliminated, the freed-up payment is applied to the next smallest balance.

This creates momentum and can be motivating because you eliminate balances quickly. The tradeoff is that the total interest paid may be a bit higher than an avalanche strategy, which prioritizes the highest APR first.

Use this calculator to estimate the payoff timeline under a snowball plan and compare that to a minimum-only repayment pattern. The best strategy depends on your balance sizes, rates, and how much extra you can contribute each month.

  • Keep all minimum payments current.
  • Apply extra cash to the smallest balance first.
  • Roll the old payment into the next debt after each payoff.
  • Track progress to stay motivated and reduce interest faster.

Frequently asked questions

What is the debt snowball method?

It means paying the smallest debt first while maintaining minimum payments on the others, then rolling that payment into the next smallest debt.

How is this different from debt avalanche?

Snowball prioritizes the smallest balance first for momentum, while avalanche prioritizes the highest APR to reduce total interest faster.

Why is this useful?

It can build momentum and help you stay consistent by creating quick wins. It also makes the payoff plan easier to sustain.

Does this include fees or late charges?

No. This estimate uses the balances, APRs, and minimum payments entered here and does not include lender fees, late fees, or additional penalties.

Can I include cards and loans together?

Yes. This calculator is designed for a few revolving or installment balances of different sizes and rates in one snowball repayment plan.

Is this a guarantee?

No. This is a planning tool only and does not guarantee final affordability, lender approval, or exact payoff timing.
